Gabe nodded. “Pregnancy is a serious possibility. So we marry sooner rather than later, particularly if you want to reconcile with your grandmother. You’ve only just begun to reestablish your relationship with her. I don’t want my taking you to bed to sabotage that. Better she think we married because of The Inferno, than suspect it was a shotgun wedding.”

The possibility wiped every single thought from Kat’s head, but one. Pregnancy. A baby. Gabe’s baby. The mere thought that she could be carrying his child made her lightheaded. Images flashed through her mind. A dark-haired son with eyes of liquid gold. A baby nursing at her breast. Gabe protectively cradling a child they’d created. Gabe, The Inferno burned out, caught in a trap of her making.

Oh, dear God. She couldn’t do that to him.

Kat yanked free of his arms. “No. That’s not possible. I’m not pregnant, not after just one mishap.”

Instead of replying, Gabe simply lifted an eyebrow at the absurdity of her response.

“Okay, fine,” she said. Her hands darted through her hair, destroying the sleek knot and finishing the job Gabe had started. “It’s a possibility. But a remote one, right?”

“If you say so. I’m not willing to take the risk. We need to marry, anyway, if I’m to get my hands on Heart’s Desire. This just put an expiration date on our engagement a little sooner than expected.”

“How can there be an expiration date when we weren’t actually engaged? I mean, it’s not like you even proposed. Not really. In fact, I think I’m the one who did all the proposing.” Aware her voice had risen, she snatched a deep breath, struggling to regain her self-control, an almost impossible task. Everything seemed to hit at once, overwhelming her. “Oh, Gabe. What are we going to do?”

“We’re going to take it one step at a time.”

She nodded, steadied by his calm response. “And the first step is getting married.”

Gabe laughed, though she didn’t catch so much as a trace of humor in the sound. “Wrong. The first step is dealing with the Dantes and the preparation for our wedding.”

“And that’s a bad thing?” she asked uncertainly.

He hesitated. “That’s a complicated thing.”

Kat quickly discovered just what he meant by that when they were met at the airport by a private car carrying Primo. He puffed on a fragrant cigar, releasing a tiny wreath of smoke that practically jittered with nerves. After being introduced to Matilda, he turned to Kat. The shock of his resemblance to Gabe dissolved beneath the enthusiasm of his European-style greeting, a tight hug and a kiss on each cheek. Fortunately, her years in Italy had accustomed her to the exuberance of many of its compatriots and she returned the embrace with a natural generosity.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she told him.

“And you.” He stepped back and held her at arm’s length in order to get a good look at her. “So. You are Gabriel’s Inferno mate. The Inferno has been most generous in its choice for my grandson.
